2019 has been a time of Casa reaching out in many ways. The last several months have been busy indeed.
Starting at the end of the summer we were excited to open our shower ministry for the homeless in our area. With the donations of members and friends, we were able to remodel the Renewal Center so that a new shower installation with washer and dryer could be made available to people who need it. In June two Sundays were dedicated to receiving new towel donations and blessing the towels on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays each week volunteers that there from 10 am – 2 pm to provide access to our guests and share a few needed items for them to take.
Toward the end of every summer, our members collect school supplies to give to children and youth in our Casa family and also to one of the schools we know of that has a high need for school supplies. This year we gave backpacks, notebooks, pencils and more to the Herrera school in Phoenix.
Later in the summer, recognizing the ongoing high temperatures we began to distribute water and hats to the homeless who come through our neighborhood. Again our members stepped up, donating water by the case and lightweight hats to help other less fortunate individuals.
Fall roared in with our usual series of events. September was a time to welcome new saints into the family of our Lord. Five adults and two young people were baptized and we dedicated one child at our annual Baptism and Barbecue.
The beautiful mid-September weather allowed us to enjoy sitting outside with time to chat and relax together as the family of God.
DJ, who has been a member of Toastmasters for about ten years, volunteered to provide a class for our leadership and anyone else, to improve our public speaking skills. Those of us who were able to attend learned a lot. I am still practicing and counting my “uh’s and “so’s”.
The church celebrated 49 years serving LGBTQ and allies in Phoenix this fall. While this was a special celebration we are looking forward to our 50th Anniversary Celebration next October and hoping to have many of our former members join us in the celebration. If you want to receive anniversary updates send your email address to RevAdero@CasadeCristo.org.
VOLUNTEERING AND SERVING
Our long-standing relationship with the Arizona Gay Rodeo Association resulted in an invitation from the International Gay Rodeo Association to Volunteer at the 33rd World Gay Rodeo Finals the week of October 24 – 27th.
Our Annual Fall Festival immediately followed the Rodeo on Oct. 31st. Children and adults, young and old joined our Casa Nation on the parking lot for an old fashioned block party. We served hot dogs, popcorn, snow cones and cotton candy while Judah! played worship music. One highlight was the huge stuffed animals given out as door prizes to the winners who all received tickets just for attending our party.
Another place you could see Casa this fall was at the Rainbows Festival in Heritage Park. We again gave out our I am Loved stickers to hundreds of people who came by our booth. We may not be able to change every little thing that is wrong in our world but at least the members of Casa know we can share the love of God with people everywhere.
Well, that covers August, September, October and the beginning of November. We’ll keep you updated with more news about what the members of Casa are doing to share God’s love in our world today!
